Buses/Public Transportation

Clarksville Transit System has served the city for 20 years with regular bus routes, trolleys and paratransit vehicles.

City buses began carrying passengers on June 1, 1987, and have run six days a week ever since. The CTS has grown over the years, and it provided more than 662,917 rides last year. CTS has seven routes — Route 1 Fort Campbell, Route 2 Clarksville, Route 3 Cunningham Loop, Route 4 Peachers Mill Road, Route 5 Hilldale, Route 6 Madison Street and Route 7 Governor's Square Mall. Buses make half-hour stops between 6:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

CTS officials estimate 67 percent of their riders are people seeking reliable transportation to and from work. For some Clarksville and surrounding area residents, it is their only means of transportation.

The cost to ride the city bus is $1. Students, disabled citizens and senior citizens 65 and older will receive a discount. Children are 4 and younger ride free.

All transfers are 25 cents.

CTS offers monthly, daily and 10-day passes that can be purchased at the Downtown Transit Center, 200 Legion St.

Call 553-2429 or go online to the CTS page at www.cityofclarksville.com.

Paratransit service for people with disabilities transports about 3,400 passengers per month. The service is provided though approved applications and scheduled appointments only. The fare is $2 per scheduled trip. Hours of service are 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday and 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturdays.

For information or to apply for Paratransit service, call 553-2470.

Monthly and annual hangtag-based parking permits are available for the Cumberland Plaza Garage, Transit Garage, other surface lots and residential parking.

Call 553-2436 or go to the Parking Authority page at www.cityofclarksville.com.

Expired meter parking tickets are $5, and violations for parking in a handicap zone, fire lane or in front of a fire hydrant are $50, and both amounts double after 10 days.

Drivers License

Tennessee state law allows 30 days from the date of residency to obtain a driver's license. New residents are required to show proof of U.S. citizenship or lawful permanent resident status. Individuals who are in the United States on a valid temporary visa, such as a student or work visa, may apply for a Certificate for Driving.

Testing for a driver's license is held at the Tennessee Driver's License Testing Center at 220 W. Dunbar Cave Road. Testing center hours are 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday through Friday. Anyone wishing to take the required road test should make an appointment online at www.tennessee.gov/safety. The department cannot guarantee walk-in appointments will be seen the same day.

Two forms of identification are required to obtain a driver's license, including a certified document listing the birth date (a birth certificate) and another showing proof of name. Applicants should also bring proof of a Social Security number and two documents proving Tennessee residency. Credit cards or pay stubs are not acceptable forms of identification. All forms of identification must be original or certified. For more on these documents go to www.tennessee.gov/safety or check Page 12 of the Tennessee Driver Handbook.

A woman whose name has changed because of marriage or divorce should supply either a certificate of marriage or a divorce decree to verify the change.

If you misplace your Tennessee driver's license, you may get an initial replacement for $8. Subsequent duplications will cost $12. Duplicate licenses may be obtained through the department's Web page, www.tennessee.gov/safety. For commercial licenses, the cost is $12 for the initial replacement and $16 for a subsequent license.

The department reminds motorists who obtained licenses between 2001 and 2004 that upon the next renewal, they must show proof of U.S. citizenship or lawful permanent residency in order to renew a driver's license.
